The comparison of two letters, like here in "Letter from Birmingham Jail" written by Martin Luther King Jr. and "A More Perfect Union" by Barak Obama, shows the differences, strengths, and weaknesses of the the two letters. Personally I can relate much more to 'A More Perfect Union Speech' than to "Letter from Birmingham Jail" because the fact that I am around for what Barak Obama is bringing to attention. I never knew what it was like in the Days of Martin Luther King Jr. In that time of King Jr. racism was much more prominent and the movement towards civil rights had never bee stronger. The types of racism today are much less severe then in King's time, not saying that racism isn't an issue today because it is, but it is just a different time.

In Barak Obama's speech 'A More Perfect Union' he directs racism more to a personal level than King, although racism has been a big part of both their lives. Obama addresses how he grew up in a family that was looked down upon by society, but he has fought through those adversities. Obama is telling his story of racism to the people to show that it can be overcome. King on the other hand speaks for the nation on the subject of racism. He speaks for the mistreated black community. He use the word 'we' very often when talking about the push for civil rights movement. I find this very appropriate since Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential civil rights leaders this country has witnesses.

Spring Break

As Mitch went home Friday afternoon he was not really looking forward to break because of the fact that he was going to be working all week long. Mitch works at the Rosemount Ice Arena and he was scheduled over spring break. It started off on Sunday when he worked a from 5 to 1130. The first official day of spring break came and Mitch was up at 9 at on his way to work from 10 to 430, which he was scheduled this shift until Thursday. He wasn't to mad that he had to work all these days over break because he desperately needed the money. He wrapped up his break working Friday and Saturday from 3 to 1130, but of course he still had time to work on his extremely important English paper.

Paper Progress

My topic for this paper is still under question. I am leaning towards violence in video games as my topic. I think this topic will be good for this paper because there are to very distinct sides of this topic. One side is that violence in video games effects violence out in the real world. The other side of this topic is that violent video games do not have any substantial effect on people. I am still undecided on which side I will be taking, but whichever side I decide to choose could be strongly argued. The toughest part about this paper will be choosing a side and researching both sides of the topic.

A Modest Proposal

Jonathan Swift's modest proposal to solve the poverty level and famine in Ireland was to eat year old children. When I first read through this I had to go back a couple sentences to see if I was reading correctly; unfortunately I was. This proposal by Swift is extremely far fetched, but if you really think about it he is one of the few who have tried to help this problem in Ireland. When I read this proposal I was a little bit disturbed, but after I finished I went back and read the background on Jonathan Swift. I was pleased to read that he was concidered a master of satire.
